Just a quick one. I have had two filters running side by side now for 8 months (the ones below) and now it is time for an external one. Was looking at a Eheim 2222 or even a 2224 if that is what is needed.

(filters in now are

Hydor Crystal Duo R10

and

Hagen Fluval 3PLUS

)

Now what i have at the min is almost double what is needed for my tank. 150l ish. But they are taking space up, plus i like the idea of an external one.

I have a box of Carbon, Ceramic "O"s and Hex shape Pre Filter stuff.

What would be the process you would use to swap the filters over. Or even would you do it?

What I would do is take out the sponges from the existing filters (don't clean them or wash them, unless they're very clogged in which case wash them in tank water), cut them up and add them in with the new ceramic media to the external filters. Obviously don't put tap water into the new externals.

This way you have all the nitrifying bacteria from your old filter in your new one.

I'd run your existing filters alongside your new external for around six weeks. It should be then safe to take out your old filters.
