Hello all :)

Today I upgraded from a 48 litre tank to a 65 litre tank (fish box 40 to fish box 60). I transferred all the fish, gravel and plants over, and am running the old filter alongside the new one until the new one is established. I of course transferred the old water too! (although this did have to be topped up with treated tap water).

Is there anything else I need to consider or do? I may have forgotten to mention things that I have also done!

No need to do anything else. In all honesty transferring the old water over will have very little benefit of any, but it won't do any harm.

Thanks grant1897, that's good to know that I seem to have done everything sensibly! I used the old water so that it wasn't a huge shock to the fish, or the filter. How long do you think it will take my new filter to become established so that I can take the old filter out? Shop suggested a couple of weeks....I don't want to take it out and end up with ammonia or anything nasty!

If you take the media out of your old filter and put it in your new one, you won't have to run both. Even if you can't put the whole lot in, but put a bit, it will speed up the process as the bacteria can spread and colonise the new filter quickly. Otherwise you're looking at six weeks to be sure.

Cool thanks, I'll run them together for a couple of weeks just to be sure. By transferring over media do you mean transfer of the water? I did transfer that over so am hopeful of a quick transition

I mean the stuff inside the filter, the sponge etc. It may not fit exactly but if you can cut it up and cram it in somehow you'll be laughing.

Ah yes, I've done that before when I needed to change my biological filter sponge and it worked a treat :)

Thanks for the advice :) It really is much appreciated as while I can maintain a tank, I'm just not so familiar with the terminology used :) going to keep an eye on these forums though to get more tips etc.

I am so chuffed with how my new tank looks, I have the same number of plants before and it looks so much better spaced out and the fish look wonderful now they are schooling :)

Will see what I can sort :) it probably looks a bit plain to a lot of people but compared to my of tank set up, less is definitely more lol

I have had a small amount of ammonia appear so don't think my change went as smooth as I had hoped but will keep on top of it and make sure I get my filter up and running ASAP . Keep your fingers crossed for me and my fish!

Have you thought about a background? A dark one might be nice, perhaps plain black? Your neons would really stand out against it.

Suffered an ammonia spike yesterday which I have sorted, now have rising nitrites which I am also keeping an eye on. Lost 2 tetras and more than likely will lose a 3rd in the next 24 hours :( Doing everything recommended to try and keep a lid on this, keep your fingers crossed people :(

Sorry to hear that :(
Big regular water changes with dechlorinated, temperature matched water is about the only thing you can do...
