Update!

Levi: Levi looks fine. He hasn't been showing ANY symptoms of illness, but when I shone a flashlight on him the day before yesterday I did see some gold... So I treated him with Maracide just to kill the parasite before it does any harm. Hopefully I caught him in an early stage and he can be saved? I started dosing two days ago, and today I did a water change and gradually put in medically treated water.

Dion: Dion's been flashing everywhere, on everything. He doesn't seem to be pooping much, but still eats vigorously. Should I keep feeding him? He stays at the top of the water and looks dead, but a second later he could be dashing around the tank in a mad flurry, flashing on everything. His tank is heated at 82-84 degrees F, I can't really tell, but it DEFINITELY cant be more than 86F. I've been trying to lower the temp all day to an 82. When I turn on the filter (a 3 gal filter for 5 gal tank, fairly gentle, put on lowest pressure) Dion gets spun, so I leave it off. My mom says he was flaring at her today when she wore her red shirt, and I take that to be good?

I can SEE the gold on him now, even without the flashlight... D: Today I dosed again using the same procedure as Levi. After each water change for each fish I rinsed all the material with hot water to try and kill any parasites that remained on the material.

Am I doing anything wrong? Does it look like they're improving? D:

Thanks again in advance.

Sounds ok so far but I would recommend getting a thermometer as sometimes heaters can heat slightly higher than the temp they are set at. I wouldn't let the temp go higher than 82f and complete darkness for at least 7 days.

Velvet is actually a parasite and needs light to survive so by keeping it dark it should help with the whole cycle. Also because it's a parasite that is why Dion is flashing everywhere trying to knock them off his body and he's probably feeling quite stressed.

I'm sure you'll see some improvement soon but it won't be overnight. Keep feeding him but don't overdo it and I would leave the filter off too for now. Don't want him feeling dizzy on top of everything else

Good luck and look foward to another update soon :good:

Does that mean I'll have to cover all sides of the tanks? 'Cause I have DIon in the kitchen... And we turn on the lights when we eat o_o

Btw- I have a thermometer, but the scale's really close.

You could just cover the tank with a teatowel or tablecloth. We do that when we're spawning so that the parents aren't disturbed too much by our going in and out of the kitchen all the time.

We've got a thermometre like that......and I confess I have to use a magnifying glass to see what it says lol
