I've been watching for a small tank on Craigslist for a few weeks now and just found one for free. Still waiting to find out if I got to it first, so this may be moot, but I've got my fingers crossed. When I first saw the ad it said the tank came with a betta, but now it says there's a pair of mollies with about 15 fry and a tetra. I don't know what kind of tetra and I don't know much about mollies, but am I correct in believing that a 5-gallon aquarium is totally inappropriate for mollies?

I was thinking I'd go ahead and get the tank and then see if my LFS will take the fish and they can hopefully find a more suitable home that way. Does that sound likely to work? Does anyone know how likely the LFS would be to take the fry, or if I took in the adult mollies and the tetra, would it be possible to raise the fry to a reasonable size in the 5-gallon and then take them to the LFS? If so, what size would that be? My eventual goal is to have a small tank for a betta, but I want to do the right thing by the other fish if possible.

Would appreciate any thoughts on the best route to take. If I can raise the fry, any tips on doing so? My fishkeeping experience is pretty limited and I've never had fry of any sort. Thanks!

You could bring the fry along for a while in a tank that size Robyn. If you look at it, a 5 is only a few inches shorter than a 10 which will hold a female and her fry for at least 6 weeks, that is where I kept that drop that I made a thread out of, both female and fry had to be moved after the second drop though, the tank just couldn't hold that many fish.

Ok, no need for me to worry, then. :) One person e-mailed before me, but if they don't show it's mine. I swear, when I was looking for a 30-gallon tank it was nothing but 3- to 5-gallon tanks. Now that I want a small tank, this is the first I've seen in at least a week.
