Fish Crazy
Hi,
My fish have been breeding ridiculously recently. I could do with some advice regarding the logistics of fry raising!
The Glowlight Danios are at it non stop at the moment and I've been netting fry out of my main tank for weeks now, syphoning 10 out again on Monday. They were initially in a breeder net but I've moved them all into a 50 litre tank. There's over 30 now, I bought 6.
My air pump powered filter is in use in my Bettas tank so I've been using a small Tetratec internal filter made fry proof with a filter bag and a cable tie. The current generated even on the lowest setting is still too much for these tiny fry so I've put it on a timer to only fire up for half an hour every 3. I figured that way the fry are not constantly battling against the current, have plenty of still water time to get used to swimming about but also have to workout when the filter fires up. Also the water's being moved occasionally to spread the heat from the heater, filter it etc. I'm worried 2 and a half hours is too long to leave the tank still though and my filter bacteria levels are just seesawing all the time. I've been doing regular water changes and dosing with prime to combat this even though tests are showing 0 ammonia and nitrite. Obviously more waste is going to be produced as the fish get larger and there will come a point when all the fry are big enough to deal with constant current so I'll leave the filter on permanently. In the meantime do you think I'm o.k doing what I'm doing or do I need to invest in another air pump and air powered filter?
Secondly, my Bristlenoses have just had their first batch of fry! I thought there was only about 10-15 but today I discovered there's 40 odd!
Again, my concern is tank filtration as 2 of them are messy enough let alone another 40. I'm going to have to keep a very close eye on this as they get larger. Fortunately there's only 6 Glowlight Danios and 6 Cardinals in there so it's not like the tank's majorly stocked to begin with. Also, food recommendations for these little beasts? Lastly, there's 1 special baby Bristlenose that left the cave and got lost so I had to rescue him from becoming a snack and put him in with the Glowlight fry. Just thought I'd share that with you!
