I was in my lfs the other day and I saw this tank full of black fish, with some white on them along their spine and at the tip of their fins. . They appeared to be sort of like a knife fish with the fin that propels them along the bottom. And their heads sort of looked like a dog's that's why I found them so cute. I don't remember the name of it, but I'd love to know what it was.

That sounds like a Black Ghost Knifefish. They grow maybe a foot in the home aquarium and are a fairly popular fish. Their strange underbelly fin gives them the ability to swim foreword and backwards. Unfortunately many people who own them complain that they hide all the time, due to their nocturnal tendencies. Ghost Knifes are believed to be nearly blind, and use a small electric sonar organ in their tail to navigate. They can be predatory to small fish, maybe less than 2", but otherwise are reported as gentle and even delicate. I'm sure you can find loads more information on google or something. :D

Nevermind I figured it out, a Ghost Knife Fish. Thanks and sorry for the dumb post.

Edit-Thanks, I didn't see the other replies until after I replied. I thought they were adorable though!

If you want a knife fish that stays smaller, I believe the African knifefish stays around 7-8" and is fairly peaceful, plus they do not have the electrical organ, and can be kept in groups. You might have to check that though, I'm not entirely sure. :p

african brown knifes get to more like 12"
brown ghost knifefish are the ones that stay around 7-8" but good luck finding one
