I found a singly fry in my tank! It's probably about a month old I'd say as the only female in my tank that I've seen fatten up thinned down about 3 weeks ago. It's just starting to show colour and as far as I can tell it'll look more like it's daddy (Yellow Mickey Mouse Platy) The mummy is a peppermint Platy (Orange and white). Anyways, I'm super excited!!

I have this fear that if my fish don't breed that their not happy (Especially with live bearers). But my fish don't often breed (This tank has been up for about 5 months now, with fish in for 3-4) Anyways my pH is 8.0 and I assumed that this would cause some breeding problems as that's a pretty basic pH as far as tropical's go. I've dealt with batches of fry before and find it a hassle, so now if I see fry I let nature take it's course. The thing is, I didn't see this last batch at all! I assumed the other tank inhabitants got all the fry, which was fine with me. But it's a nice surprise to see one has made it this far - it's not safe yet, it could still fit in my pearl gourami's mouth so we'll see how it goes.

Interesting thing with Peppermint Platys, both of the females I have are mostly white, and I can actually sort of see the fry when they get near the end of their term, I can see little black dots that I assume are eyes. -Sorta weird, sorta gross, sorta cool

The parents may just have been immature when you got them. You can probably expect more fry every 4-5 weeks now. I let nature take it's course too otherwise I'd have fry tanks all over the house! Mama platy has now departed so I don't get them any more.

I agree with Mama, there, that your fish were simply a bit on the young side for breeding. Now the male has the taste for it, there'll be no stopping him. A pH of 8.0 should not be a barrier to them breeding. More of an issue would be if you had a low KH (ie softwater), but generally high pH and high KH go hand-in-hand (not always though)

That is super exciting :D I love finding fry myself because my friends are always asking if I have any more fish to give away ( I raise and give out guppy and platy fry) Though they are not the best fish, and not the best care takers, they are loved all the same :)
