Hi,
just set up my new but secondhand (mature) tank. 4 footer with a 4 year old fluval 305 external, 6 medium sized (20cm)pieces of bogwood and 3 bags of carribsea eco complete substrate were added to the setup, along with some inert rocks. A dozen or so neons came with so I added dechlorinator and filter start to the fresh water and some bacteria in a bottle to the filter (all fresh water as I couldn't transport any tank water).

3 days later tank stats are: ammo 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate 5.0ppm but PH is 7.8, with the tap water reading exactly the same PH.

I was really expecting (and hoping) to get the PH down to 6.5 ish, how has all that wood and 3 bags of substrate which claims to lower PH not had an effect!!??

Anyone able to shed any light on a baffled fishkeeper?

You gotta have a fair bit of wood for it to cause the PH to drop, as for the substrate, never used it so cant comment.
