Underrated Fish

I think plecos are underrated in the aspect of "looks." I always hear people say how ugly they look, but I find plecos to be some of the most visually appealing fish. I think rosy barbs and crayfish are also underrated.

What fish do you think are super duper underrated?

i think neons are very underrated

i agree with neons, i think they are lovely. but i really think that VT bettas are underrated. people seem to think of them only as cheap fish that require minimum care (not true though) and don't even know that there are far more species.

one guy i met last year in the dorms told me bettas where boring but was really excited to get some WCMMs.. i think bettas have more personality than a lot of fish out there.

I agree with nino. I used to think VT's were worth nothing. But then recently I got really addicted to bettas and VT's are now gorgeous. BTW..what does WCMM mean? I think bettas are the fish with the most personality. Their color and actions show all.

Amen to that! Bettas are highly underrated (unless you happen to be active in the Betta forum, lol). They're just about the most personable small fish you can get... great for people who can't have a massive tank for an oscar or other large cichlid

Edit: WCMMs are White Cloud Mountain Minnows ;)

It's gotta be bettas. So many sold, so few appreciated.

I agree with the neons and the bettas. I myself used to think bettas were boring, until I tried breeding them. It's the coolest thing! But, my vote would actually go towards fancy guppies. I'm working on a breed to try to make the females not look so drab and grey. It's starting to work. I have females with great color in their bodies. Anyway, that's besides the point. My vote is fancy guppies :*)

electric catfish, people think they are ugly and hide loads, but ours is a real character, my fav fish in the menagerie apart from the morays, though I think it might be level pegging.

Bettas are underrated?! Whichever forum I ever go on there is a huge community of people who love bettas. I wouldn't say they were underrated...

I'd say fancy goldfish are underrated. I'd say the majority of goldfish sold are kept in inappropriate conditions, and thats why they're underrated.

Maybe danios. So often they are just seen as a commodity, a handy this-will-cycle-my-tank-and-be-indestructible sort of fish. We are lucky to have The Wolf on this forum to teach us more about them than that. I would love to have the space for a big school of danios, and a big tank to see them at their best.

Female dwarf gouramis. Again and again you see comments like, "you may not care to get these as they are drab". Hey, they are no more drab than silver dollars, and nobody complains about them, they are considered "cool" fish. I think female dwarfs are beautiful, just that subtle hint of colour in the silver. *I'd keep them on their own if I had the space.

And female guppies. Some of the nicest characters in the fish world IMO. They don't need enormous tails to be attractive, they've got personalities!

I think harlequin rasboras as a focal point fish are underated. I mean many people keep them, but in numbers like 4-6, and they are just like a schooling fish, part of a compliment of community fish. Now, kept by themselves as the main species of the tank, in a larger school, they are awesome. Under these circumstances, their colors change dramatically, they have a pretty interesting social order, and they occupy most of the tank. They are an elegant fish.

This pretty much goes for all fish who are considered "drab". My tank would be considered rather drab with harlequins, bridget rasboras, and c. habrosus, but I like the color play. Very interesting. Of course, Fasolt would object, but he knows he's special.
