UGF, IMO, are a waste of money. They don't really serve a purpose as the pull the dirt to the bottom of the tank, in order to get that out, you have to take the whole thing apart. Don't get it.

UGF's are excellent biological filters. One of the best.

The problem is that they do not do any mechanical filtration. In fact, quite the opposit, they collect gunk under the plates, which builds up and eventually begins to cause the water quiality to drop. In order to clean it you need to tear apart the entire tank.

It's messy - avoid it now while you can.

Power filters are effective and quiet, and that is what I would recommend. Something like an Aquaclear Mini would work well.

If you really want a quiet tank, then a canister filter is the way to go. They might be a bit big for a 10 gallon though, but they sure provide excellent - and silent- filtration.

I use ugf with power heads for my community tanks. I also have bio wheel filters but they make more noise than an air powered ug would. The sound of trickling water is actually very relaxing IMO.
