ok monday I fell asleap on the couch and forgot to turn the light off, so I left it off all day, now I have what apears to be diatom, wasnt too bad, noticed it on a few plants, but the glass was covered in a milky like substance (i'm assuming diatom also.

I scrubbed the glass, and the light is currently on, (this time it will be off even at the hint of sleepyness)

this is the first time I have seen diatome since I started back in may, I had it after the first week of fish hobby which was quickly removed by my the oto's when it first showed up

It is also the first time I havent seen a snail :drink:

I'm assuming that the lack of snails gave the diatom a chance, and the lack of light for the day after an extended photoperiod was just enough to let the diatome flourish

my question though, shouldnt my plants been more of a competition then say the diatome (even with the light off for 12 hours)

I havent gotten the test kits to read kh and gh yet(dont know where to get them)

but my co2 reactor is putting out about 1 bubble per six seconds on a nutrafin ladder (if that helps)

and I have been dosing with plant grow every other day at half dosage (is this too much or too little)

I'm also using a 10,000k 55 w lightbulb by catalina 55 watts in a 20g

I know it would be much more helpfull to have those readings though so really this is all just speculation

Best investment ever is a timer for your lights. I picked one up at Wal-mart for six bucks I think, and since then this hasn't been a problem, as I was notorious for forgetting to turn the lights on/off

From this it appears you are leaving the lights on for 16 hours per day or in any 24 hour period, which is way to long especially since you are running 2.75 WPG, you will have algae in no time, 12 hours a day is more than sufficient, i run mine for 10.
