I have 2 Dwarf Gouramis....one has had an ulcer on his "cheek" area for a few weeks. It basically looks like a little pimple. I treated with Melafix for 7 days and have seen no improvement. Now he has developed another one on the bottom of his lower lip. What should I do? Does anyone have any other suggestions for medications??

He appears very healthy other than that. He is very active and eats anything in sight! He is not stressed and the water quality is fine.

The other Gourami has no problems at all.

Thanks for any help!!

Dwarf gouramis carry a virus that knocks them about pretty badly. It weakens their immune system and allows bacteria and other pathogens to get into them and do damage. They are also prone to carrying Tuberculosis (TB) and this can cause similar problems. You can try to boost the fish's immune system by giving it vitamin C and beta-carotene. These are available from health food shops and you simply add some to frozen food and feed that to the fish a couple of times a day. Do regular water changes to keep the water clean and if you are really desperate take the fish to a fish vet and get some tetracycline based drugs. That might cure the ulcers. Often the treatment costs more than a replacement fish. “Waterlife Protozin” or “Wardleys Promethysul” might work as well but you normally need a strong antibiotic to treat ulcers.

First, separate the sick fish, since it can be contagious. I have treated this with acriflavine and medicated foods. I was able to prolong his life with another 4 months, but eventually, if it is the famous dwarf gourami sickness, he will not make it.

There have been several threads on this issue. Here is one which contains very good info: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?s=&amp...t&p=1511598

Good luck
