I was browsing around youtube last night watching videos of people's fish tanks and came across one where the person had their 2 bettas in small containers next to eachother so they could flare for a little bit.

Well someone commented that they need larger containers (which they do).. and of course here comes mister Know-it-all jack--- spouting off the typical ignorant "they live in puddles! They're not happy in anything bigger!" BS while calling people who disagree with him "retards" etc.
THEN the next thing they say is that they know what they're talking about b/c they've kept and breed bettas (a lie most of the ignorant turds out there make when they know they're wrong. They use this lie to try to 'one-up' whoever they're argueing with).

So anyway.. if that's not bad enough.. I was just browsing around again today.. and came across a video from this same preson (I didn't know it until after I had clicked on it) where they have 2 male bettas in one of those half gallon fish bowls!!!

UUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I really wish we could reach through our monitors and just slap the crap out of some people that REALLY deserve it!

When i had my male in a big section of the tank, he looked misserable and did nothing, just hovered in the same place all day long..

Since sectioning the tank off in to 4 sections, he his now in a smaller part and builds bubblenest and is more active then ever..

I agree really small tanks are bad, but i also think that to big of a tank they dont like also.

I think a lot depends upon the fish, but really tiny bowls are cruel like living in a box.....

I youtubed, betta fish and got people actually fighting them at parties. It seemed like college kids. They would put the second betta in and let them fight. They were all cheering. It just really made me heated! Talk about wanting to reach through the monitor. It's amazing how some people are so cruel. Especially to fish.

It's kind of funny. While doing research on bettas before I got mine, I noticed how many people were really attached and serious about them. I got my little guy and pretty much became attached instantly. How could you not when they finally recognize you and come up to the side of the tank to say what's up?

Anyway, I just needed to blow off some steam! :X

Oh I understand that. Alot of people have said they've had bettas that prefer a smaller living area. That's not what this guy was saying though. He was trying to justify putting a betta into a bowl less than a half a gallon and was basically saying that anything more would be a waste. He was just trying to be a total jacka-- and a know-it-all.

Oh another video I came across last night as well. I swear I wasn't looking for the "bad" videos people put up....
Anywho.. it was an overhead shot of a 10gallon tank, filled to the brim with guppies.
And there was a single white male VT betta at the top. At first when watching it, you can see him whipping himself around. But a closer look, you can see that the guppies are very obviously nipping the poor bettas fins and this is what is causing him to whip around as he's trying to get them off. It was aweful to watch.
But.. the 'best' part of the video was when the female betta appeared. Yep.. this person had a male and female betta in the same tank together along with the dozens upon dozens of guppies that were obviously having a snack of the bettas fins.

Yeah..

Personally I focus my outlook on the majority who love their bettas, i am very attached to mine and as already mentioned - there would be no reason not to be.

I think it's like with all creatures, some people will abuse them and there isn't much you can do. I was talking to a guy in the LFS the other day who had lost many bettas under some very strange circumstances leading up to breeding. Maybe it wasn't through incompetence but he just said it so callously that it made me feel uncomfortable talking to him anymore.

That is so mean. People like that have no feelings. That is why I refuse to watch animal planet when one of the animal police shows are on. It makes me really mad.

a.) That's normal ignorant youtube goers for you.
b.) That's the general public for you, fish are just 'fish' to them.

Same thing with dog fighting, people are just stupid. For ever one person who cares for their fish, there are at least 10 that mistreat, or even purposefully abuse them.

Siamese fighting fish are actually kept and reared in tiny little containers that contain about 1 cup of water. They spend their entire lives in there until they get sold to shops and then you or I. They have been kept and bred this way for years and don't know any better. Having said that tho it is preferable to give them some space when you buy them. They don't need a huge tank but anything that holds 10-40 litres is fine for them. When kept in bigger tanks they quite often hide up in the back corner and never swim out in the open.

Many people fight them for sport and in a lot of countries this has been going on for as long as the fish have been kept. Often it is part of these people's background & tradition. They were brought up with it and don't think any differently about it.
It is the same as hunting game for food or sport. People that live in "civilised societies" get all squeamish when they see someone slaughtering a goat or chicken, yet the people that do it often don't have any other choice. They don't have a supermarket to go and buy their meat pre-packaged and ready to cook.

Now I am not saying we should all go out and hunt game or fight fish, I am just trying to add some perspective to this thread. I personally am against keeping animals in small containers, likewise if I had to hunt game and clean it before cooking I would probably become a vegetarian. The best thing you can do is to write to the site that is hosting the "offending material" and explain why you think it should be removed. Then if you have a logical and legitimate argument, they should remove it. You can also write to the government about it and try to get them to outlaw small fish tanks and bowls and fish fights. However, the Internet is available for all and is the one great spot for freedom of expression. If you don't like what you see, don't watch it.

We don't have cable, but I've watched some of that show at fiance's parent's house.
It was just aweful and made me cry the one time I watched it.
The episode I watched, whoever it was was called b/c there was a dead dog in a parked car. This heartless person left their dog inside of their car for DAYS and it eventually died. Not sure if it had been hot, but I wouldnt' doubt it. It was just... man.. just really heartbreaking to see. Pets who trusted and loved their humans unconditionally and then just treated like that as if they're nothing :-(

Anyways, that's a bit off topic and I need to stop before I make myself cry :X

i disagree with the hiding in larger tanks thing, my Odin really loves his 55litre juwel rekord 60......its like he's lord of his own manor!
