so the other day i went to the lfs and i bought a topfin ugf for my 45 gallon tank. I love it and have noticed already that it makes a big difference in the water clarity. Its not the only filter im running though. I also have a Marineland 350. I have no complaints with either of them but i saw a topic on here that said ugf's dont go good with planted aquatiums. I have a few live plants in my tank right now but i plan on doing a planted aquarium as soon as my wood is ready to be put in. So it probly wont be for another few weeks at the soonest. My question was why arn't ugf's recomended with planted tanks? I would have thought they would be better with planted tanks because it brings nutrients to the roots of the plants. But im not a plant expert so i decided i should ask :)

Because the roots of the plants if planted in the substrate will block the filter eventually, cause damage to it and subsequently deteriorate the water quality. But you can plant the tank with different types of anubias, java fern, moss of some kind, etc..All these need to be planted on wood/stones or decoration of some kind.

This is my anubias tank:

Plants also don't like the flow past their roots; it's not a thing that would happen in nature, if you think about it :)

thanks guys, that makes sence. If i leave it in until i have my wood ready would it do any harm? it should be ready in a few weeks time. and ill take it out when i change my tank majorly, but if its going to cause major proplems before that time ill take it out now.
