Hi,
Just noticed tonight after tank ligt's went off my female german blue ram was darting around the tank, upside down and on it's side like it wasa havbing spasms. It wasn't in control of itself. It then layed on the tank floor and was still for a while, and would then suddenly move again. I then noticed the other male ram was also just on it's side on the gravel. After a few minutes they weren't moving or breathing so i removed them both from the tank. I am now worried for my other fish. The tank stats are (Tested straight after i noticed the rams)
pH - 7.6
ammonia - 0ppm
nitrite - 0ppm
nitrate - 40ppm
The nitrate level is normally around 20. The only thing i can think of as to why the nitrate reding is higher than normal is that the part of the algae wafer i feed the bristlenose each night may sometimes not get fully eaten. I fed the fish daphnia about 5 minutes before noticing the rams. The other fish stocking include:
96 Litre tank
6 cherry barbs
7 lemon tetras
1 ruby barb
1 bristlenose catfish
The tank is around 9 months old and i do a weekly 25% water change and gravel vac.
The other fish are all acting normal and seem healthy.
I last did a water change last friday. I'm going to do a water change tomorrow evening.
Can anyone suggest why the rams died?
Thanks.
