First Q:
The night-manager at work has a couple aquariums. One fresh and the other salt. He use to know how to find out the gallons of a tank just by measuring the inside of the tank's height, width and length. He said you measure it the 3 ways, divide it by something, and you'll know the tank's size. But he says he's forgotten how to do it, and I haven't seen him much, and when I see him, I forget to remind him to find out. So how is this done? Anyone know, or is it not true... not that he was lying to me. Maybe he just thought there was a way to find out.
Second Q:
This local FS so far has one out of 35 tanks, with one powerhead in it, (no powerfilter) and attached to the powerhead is a home cut and hole drilled PVC pipe that they rigged unto the powerhead, and a Lustar Hydro-flo sponge to the pipe. Well, they're about to do the same thing to the rest of their 34 fresh and saltwater tanks, and get rid of all the powerfilters. They say that is all we need,`cos it catches small things that cannot pass through the sponge, and that the sponge will house beneficial bacteria which will eat ammonia and nitrite, thus leaving just the nitrate, and then we are to do the bi-weekly 25% water change which will remove the nitrate, or most of it anyway. Is this true what they say? Because if it is, then all I want in my aquarium is a powerhead/sponge. That way, the water will be just as clean as if running a powerfilter, but also creates a lot of current and bubbles—which the powerfilter never does.
Anyway, this is what they say, and I have no reason to think they're lying about it. They've been in the business since the 70s if not the 60s. That one tank (saltwater) of theirs still has crystal clear water and never do I see dead or dying fish, and their colors are vibrant. They had this system running for a couple months now. This is how I ended up with one in my tank. Just wanted know what you guys/gals feel about it and what you all use.
Thanks!
