OK, I'm in Wal-Mart yesterday, and theyve got some Turquoise Rainbows and what they had labelled as Australian Rainbows, but I think there was a few different species in there. But theyre in with Kenyis. Well, I bought what remained, and since I wanted Rainbows anyway, I really couldnt resist. Could anyone give me some info in the turquoise rainbows? I believe theyre also known as Neon Dwarf Rainbows. The unknown rainbows look like this: theyre about 1.5-2 inches long, and at the top theyre kind of a pale bluey-green, and at the bottom theyre a reddish orange, also pale. At the base of their tail, they have a reddish tinge, and their fins are pale orange, with black edges. Any ideas at all?

I have a pair...male and female Turquoise Rainbows. They will get about 5 inches and the top half of their body is a bluish green and bottom half white, of course the male is more vibrant in color than the female. right now they are only about 3 inches and are doing great.

Sounds like there Melanotaenai Praecox. Have a look at this link Rainbowonline and you'll be able to compare pics? Also look on the members pic board to see if there like the ones I've posted a pic of that I'm trying to find the name of. Let me know how you get on bud?

I founda pic, but I dont know how to post it on here. The website is "www.aaq.com.au/ aquarium.htm"

Here is a link to a very informative rainbowfish site... have fun looking around there.. its vast. keep in mind that a lot of those fish aren't readily available in the aquarium trade either.
but.. look at the neon rainbow, M. praecox, and turquoise, M. lacustris.
The pic in the link doesn't look like either to me :/

Edit: Sorry Scougie! I didn't even check the link you posted before i did... its the same site! haha. anyways... i guess its just THAT good;)

I've always known M. lacustris as the Turquoise Rainbow.

I meant the pic of the fish he linked us to doesn't look like M. praecox nor M. lacustris to me.

I think I've identified the little beggars! I believe they are Murrays Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia fluvatilius). Has anyone ever kept these? Heres a link to the pic: www.sanfa.org.au/ fw-fish-09-murrayrb.htm

BTW, I know it doesnt look like the fish in my first link, their color seems to change a lot (brighter, paler)
