I was looking back at my info from the seller, on my jewels…

I’m not sure where I got my original info??? it may have been Dan’s fish, but since the new website, they began giving less info about the fish… anyway I though they were a soft water fish, and I have mine in my soft water African tank… not sure where I got them, but Inthink it was either Dans or Aqua Imports ( linked above )…now I’m seeing the like alkaline water, like we have from this area, and what my well water is… however my group is currently in a dark soft water tank, they seem to be thriving, and are plenty colorful… thoughts on these ???

Just me, but I would probably move them to more natural water conditions. I bet you'll have to move them in order for eggs to hatch.

They are Rubricatochromis guttatus, a form from Lake Turkana in Kenya. They were taken from a hotel pool/pond a few years ago, but the name exsul is invalid. It's a form with few blue spots on its red flanks - one of many forms found in the lake.
The lake is hot (25.5c) and alkaline. R guttatus is an adaptable species that thrives in water that's ... wet. It's really widespread in Africa. The exsul colour form is an oddball, and the name was dug up from the past to market it, most likely. In spite of its odd colouring, it's a standard jewel.
