I dropped a tiny chunk of tuna fish out of a can into the tank the other day out of curiosity and the fish went crazy over it.

I am just wondering if tuna fish would be ok for them from time to time? (I have about 9 cans left that I don't think I'll ever use haha).

If it's not good for them I'll just throw it out.

Thanks for the info,

I don't know. They use preservatives, don't they? I don't know how that would affect your tank.

You're much better off sticking with diced shrimp and slivers of salmon or trout.

salmon is ok for them huh? Is it 'good' for them, or it just wont hurt them?

That was just a suggestion. I don't know about "salmon" in particular, but the books I've read have all stated that "slivers of fish raw meat are appreciated". Doesn't say more than that. Of course thawing would be necessary...

I see no reason why canned tuna could not be used for occasional fish food, just make sure it is the kind canned in spring water not brine or oil.

Thanks for the replies. It is canned in water and the only 'preservative' is salt.

One of the reasons I was hoping it would work is because it sinks faster than blood worms. I have a pictus cat at the bottom and blood worms never make it that far. He seemed to like the tuna chunk that fell down there.....but now that I think about it, isn't the salt bad for him?

Rinse the tuna in a little tank water to remove any excess salt before feeding it to the fish and it will be fine, if you only use the tuna as a occasional treat a little ingested salt wont hurt.
