Truly Orange Bettas

how are people able to dye bettas? and how do you notice if they are dyed? sorry to highjack your topic!
when they get wet the colour runs :hey:

see signature. (anyone have an actual answer?)

why do you want us to look at signature? what signature?

-and the answer is that some colors that are more solid or look more unrealistic or unnatural are dyed, like a hot-pink neon probably would be dyed.

The dyeing of fish is an extremely cruel practise because of the methods used... ie dipping fish in caustic to remove the slime coating, then in dye, then in an irritant to stimulate the production of a new slime coat (about 10% of fish survive this procedure). Or multiple injections of dye under the skin.

They can be detected because their colour may be blotchy or there may be problems with the eyes or skin from the methods used... there may be multiple tiny healed infections from the needle, or even pockets of dye that move under the skin. These methods are not foolproof - the best way to detect dyed fish is to know what your fish are supposed to look like. Mostly they either enhance natural colours by adding dye (so if a fish is ridiculously bright and that species isn't known for it, it might be dyed) or they add colours or patterns to a white background. Mostly they will work with either transparent or albino fish - the african glass catfish and indian glassfish cop it all the time, and if you see those with colourful stripes or polka dots they have been dyed. I have also seen dyed albino corydoras catfish and gouramis. If the pattern is geometrical or looks unnatural, it probably is. There are also people who have taken to tattooing company logos, symbols (love hearts or stars) or words (people's names or 'I love you') onto fish. Obviously if the marking is obviously man made then the fish has been painted.

This isn't the worst of it... fish that are missing tails have been deliberately mutilated, they cut off the fishes' tails because they think it looks good. Needless to say don't buy.
