JUS A QUESTION, OF TROPICAL FISH,
DO THEY NEED THE LIGHTING OF THE AQURIUM TO STAY ALIVE OR GAIN ENERGEY OR N E THING?
CUS THE PERSON AT THE FISH SHOP SAID THEY DNT, THE LIGHT ONLY FOR US TO SEE THEM,
BUT ANOTHER FISH SHOP, THEY SAID FISH REQUIRE THE AQURIUM LIGHT/

No, a light is not needed, as long as they get natural light or light from lighting fixtures in the room. You don't want them to live in complete darkness.

Well, I have been playing around with the tank light on versus the tank light off. I find that with my tank light on, there is more activity then with the light off. The lights in the room are on in both cases. I think that the light is not needed, but does keep the fish swimming around more.

This will depend somewhat on the fish. Nocturnal fish (i.e. many loaches) will naturally prefer less light and might be more active with the lights off.

Basically, I believe fish thrive when there is a natural division between night and day. Day active fish use the dark hours to sleep in, and nocturnal fish do the same with the hours of daylight. How you achieve this division is less important, whether with artificial light or sunlight. The only thing is that artificial light is a must if you're going to grow plants.
