What is an adequate size for a small tropical fish which will be home to 5 or so fish?

Fish you want to keep

Probably nothing smaller than 10 gallon/40 litres as a minimum. Smaller volumes of water are more difficult to keep their parameters stable. But as others have said, it does depend on the fish you want.
