Hi all,,i discovered these tropheus moori fish at the lfs,,i have never seen these or heard off this type of fish before,,currently i have a malawi set up,,just a 42 gallon tank, with 8 small fish, and a cuckoo catfish.
Could i have just one of these moori fish in with the malawi fish?
or should i start a fresh tank, and stock it with around 5 or 6 of the moori fish@
i know they are vegetarian,,algae etc,,and dont do well with protein.

Tropheus as a rule are nasty little fish, a groupe of their own species is best, but i have mixed them before and while a few are fine most are nasty and bully everything in sight.

I've never kept moori personally so someone else may have a better answer then my general section.

well tropheus moori fish are quit nasty and bad..... but they are kind of cute don't you think  I suppose that one won't be a problem but you'd better have a Hospital or quarentine tank in hand just (in case) they are not peaceful you know when a fish or something get's their attention things may get nasty or maybe too nasty  a tank for their own would be better. :good:

If they are quite aggressive can you mix them with mbuna?
well most mbuna cichlids are aggressive and they can fend themself from being bullied, I think they both have the same amount aggression so bullying might not be easy in such cases.I would say yes you can mix them as long you have what you need, here is a list of things you might need for mixing such fishes:

(1)hospital/quarentine tank.

(2)those fishes need big space in order for them to occupy terratorys.

(3) lots of cave and rocks in order for the harrased fish to hide.

Usually, tropheus are kept in groups of at least 12 or more. They are highly aggresive towards their own kind. They usually are kept alone as a group. Mbuna can be kept with them. They can also be kept as single fish in a community tank. I dont think a 42 Gallon tank will hold an adult colony. However, you could grow a group out in there. A larger tank is needed. I would say a standard 75 gallon is the min for an adult colony. In your case a single tropheus would be best. Getting 5 or 6 usually end up as one fish that kills the rest.

6ft tank if you are planning mixing Mbuna with Haps/Peacocks/Vics they need the open water space away from the rocks.
