Would a single member of the species Trichogaster trichopterus (blue or gold gourami I think) get along with 9 Tiger Barbs in a 55 gallon planted tank?
Brilliant, thought as much, latin names are't often used on this site patiuclarly when used in reference to Gourami, anyhow....
Gourami and Barbs are considered compbatible (also come from a similar region; Sumatra, although different water based environments) although there is always a risk, particularly when keeping any fish with good sized fins (gourami) and barbs, and keeping any reasonably aggressive fish together.
Personally as long as i had somewhere suitable for re-homing the Gourami if trouble does manifest i'd take the risk quite readily.
Trichogaster trichopterus are one of the more robust gourami as it is and it sounds like you have plenty of space and cover for retreat.

Hey let me know how it goes I am planning to put some Trichogaster trichopterus in with my Barbs ... very hard trying to find fish compatiable with barbs they can be nasty little things when they want to be.
