Last night we discovered that one of our balas in the 55 gallon tank had white spots all over him. We're not really sure where the ich may have come from because we have not introduced any new fish into that aquarium in probably a couple of months since getting a couple of new gourami.

I got some Ich medicine but I wanted to find out if it could potentially harm plants or snails?

depends what you are using meds wise. i used a product called ws3 formula by king british. not sure if you can can get it in the states. it has a high malacite green content. please excuse the spelling. and no added copper solutions. i halved the dose and treated for 10 days. i lost a few ramshorns and an apple snail in the weeks following treatment. but my amano shrimp were untroubled by it. it shouldent damage your plants. one thing you should do is raise the temp to 30o c. ich finds it hard to reproduce at high temps it will help stem the tide. good luck.

Sorry about the issue i think the best way to it without harming anything would be raising your temperaturr in the tank a.maximum of 86degrees and adding some aquarium salt. I would suggest using a seperate tank to treat affected fish but to treat both tanks. Also to clean the gravel. Also if you do use the ich medication to use carbon to filter out the medication after treatment. I have success with tji method. Hopefully this helped good luck!

we had ich after our discus got stressed after an emergency tank swap we upped the temp to 86 and used aquarium salts after two days no more ich happy days

Thanks for the advice everyone. We did add salt to the water but don't have a way to turn up the temperature in the water as the heater is one that automatically shuts off after the water reaches 78f.
