I presently have a few big amazon sword plants in my tank and I wanted to add some to my other tank.

Is it possible to cut a piece of the plant off and transplant that piece into another tank.

If this is possible were would I cut the piece off and how would I go about doing this.

Thanks

Have none of your swords plants produced runners with new plants on them? That is the normal way to propgate swords.

new to plants I have never had them before what do you mean by runners to propagate plants

These plants are only about 1 month old bought a LFS stand about 12 inches tall

Thanks

Amazon Swords and many other rosette type plants are flowering plants, but also have the capability to reproduce vegetatively. A special "stem" called a runner grows from the rosette and under normal circumstances, grows parallel to the substrate. At intervals along the runner, a small plant forms, roots grow down and anchor the runner, and leaves grow from there, the runner then continues.

When the small plants are large enough to handle, you cut the runner and move the young plants wherever you like.

Swords are quite buoyant plants and if the substrate is not conducive to secure rooting, the runner often floats free of the substrate, but develops in much the same way.

I have the same question. Does anybody know where a picture of what one of these runners would look like? I think I may have some, but I don't know.

Thanks

I think I have a couple of these runners, but they're much more vertical than horizontal.

Don't have a pic, but they are tube-like stalks that grow 6-12" long, with what looks like a little bunch of very small leaves on the end. One of my runners has two of these bunches (and flowered on the end, too).

Yup, that's a flower stalk. My Sword has two of them.

After time, smal amazon swords will grow from it and grow roots on the stem. Cut them off and plant them

Here's mine with the small swords up above it. You can kinda make em out in this crappy pic. It's a 24" tall tank for size comparison

Thanks for all the help guys

Specially for taking the time to provide a picture this makes it much more clear now

Looks like I'll have to wait for other flower to sprout up before I cut it out.

Thanks again
