Tpn+ Recommended Dosage

[/quote]

Hi Alan, the numbers for TPN+ above are a "one size fits all." Once you have mixed the powders into the water, you will dose 1ml per 20l everyday.
Only EI numbers vary from tank to tank.

Thanks, Aaron

Thanks Aaron,

If i went for EI, would i be right in assuming the rates would be as follows? (as taken from George Farmers guide My link)

10-20 Gallons (38-76 litres)
10ml solution or 1/8 tsp KNO3 3x a week
5ml solution or 1/32 tsp KH2PO4 3x a week
2ml solution or 1/32 tsp K2SO4 3x a week
2ml or 1/32 tsp traces 3x a week

Personally this sounds a bit better to me as there is a lot less ingredients to buy :) Would it have the same effects as the TPN+ mix?

Alan

I haven't changed the lid, i just have it with the lid resting on the base of the arc pods. It doesn't look perfect but i haven't found a better alternative. Although i have actually been looking at a 36W overhead luminaire on ebay. I think that might be a bit too much lighting though for my wee tank. I haven't heard of a boyu light?

It's something else that's broken on the arc pod, i tried it with the other bulb (that i know works) and it was still not lighting.

Alan

The Boyu light is this one. You can see it in this thread.

Wow, forget the arc pod, i'll be going for that! Thanks for the heads up! :D

I see the description says it is 350mm long, did Adam have to 'tweak' it to fit or does it adjust to 400mm to fit the Arcadia tank?

I think the arms extend outwards slightly - that might not be the exact light though, as the listing I had marked has vanished. But I think it looks a lot better and cleaner than the arc pods, and gives you more selection with the tubes.

Just purchased the light and the dry powder ferts. Now i have to sit on my hands for 2-3 weeks till it all arrives!! ho-hum...

I have a 35 litre Arcadia Arc tank, on which i am using 2 x 11w arc pods (1 at the moment as the other is broken)

Alan - how are you finding the tank with two arcpods? Did you replace the lid with a new one or are you leaving the tank open? And is it just the bulb that is broken or something else?

I've just ordered another one for mine in preference over the Boyu light, and can still cancel if you think it's not working out!

got the boyo on my 50 liter with three white t5's great piece of kit well worth the money :good:

o nearly forgot it comes with a 2 pin plug not a uk three pin so have a spare plug handy if your ordering one

Off topic much! :p

Aaron do you use some kind of funnel to get the powder into the dosing bottle? Any change of giving us a list of essential items (or at least helpful items) for the whole DIY TPN+ process?

What I've can think of : -

Scales
Dry Powder Containers + spare for measuring
Dosing bottle (I have a couple of empty TPN+ bottles that I'll be using)
Funnel

Then the obvious powders + De-ionised water.

Also have you found that there is a specific order that aids mixing? Like adding the powder to water rather than adding water to powder?

Thanks in advance!!

You have listed everything you need if something doesnt mix completely i add some warm water then give it a good shake thats usually sorts it out.

I use old TPN+ bottles, but you can buy them from AE or fluid sensor online.

To get the powders in I just weigh them out on a piece of paper with a crease and pour them in. But you could use a funnel.

I fill the TPN+ bottle up with 500ml water and then addd the powders. Put the lid on and give i a good shake. using warm water helps with disolving a bit.

A graduated pippette is handy for measuring out smaller doses, i used a 3ml pippette for my 60l. For my 216l, i use a 50ml syringe which i also bought from fluid sensor online.

Alan, those figures are ok, but if you arent running CO2 injection then I would condiser halfing the numbers because the plants wont need that much,
it supplies the same nutrients as TPN+, but just in larger quantities thats all.

How important is the Potassium Sorbate in this mix? I've gotten all the other ingredients but just having a minor complication in getting hold of the Potassium Sorbate. Is it massively important or can I mix up a batch without it to start off with?

It's quite important, without it the chelator's will break down, and will form a ferrous precipitate in the mixture, leaving some of the nutrients useless.

Potassium sorbate is used to stop the formation of mould, usually from the traces.
Ascobic acid is what stops the chelators breaking down
