Excellent find! Do you happen to have any photos of the other lesser known species? All I've ever seen of are drawings. Thanks, Neale! I may have to try to track some of these guys down!(probably wont happen)
T. oligolepis looks almost exactly the same as
T. jaculatrix. It has no spots between the bands. According to
Allen there is quite a bit of confusion over this fish, and fish attribute to this species in the past probably don't belong there, particularly not the specimens from Australia. There is a picture (drawing) of the type specimen of
T. oligolepis in the Allen paper. The giveaway feature of this species is that the third spine in the dorsal is the biggest, not the fourth and fifth as in the other
Toxotes.
T. kimberleyensis is the freshwater species from Australia. It is photographed in the Allen paper. It looks like
T. jaculatrix but has a solid black anal fin. The fish referred to as
T. oligolepis in Baensch, volume 2, appears to be in fact
T. kimberleyensis
T. lorentzi is in Baensch, vol 2, as well. It's rather a dull fish, basically tan in colour with vague vertical banding. There's a photo
here.
Cheers,
Neale
