Totally Irresponsible Lfs

I have friends like this - one has hamsters in cages that are falling to bits and far too small but they aren't even prepared to buy another tank, although one hamster constantly gets out and they kept suspecting it was dead, until they caught it 4 days later. See if that was me I'd just buy another cage - you can get one for £20 or so surely - and they spend that on wine in a week! In the end I got one for free that someone didn't want anymore and took it round for them because I was worried about the hamster!

See I can easily "accidentally" spend £50+ on fish stuff yet I cant justify paying for a holiday, food or clothes to myself as easily :p

Yeah, I almost never leave my LFS without spending 20 pounds or more, just on bits and pieces, definitely can justify spending lots of on a fab fish. Also love buying stuff for my cats, can't imagine not buying the fish or cats something they need!

haha I have to do that one day would love to see my girlfriends face as I walk through the door with the tank instead of clothes

LOLS. While I am sorry for the fish, I can't help laughing at some of the other comments up there. :p If only *I* could do that! Buy a fish, without my parents even being able to do something.... (although knowing them they would anyway). Sadly I'm only 13 and still would have 3 years to go.... But in Canada I think the law is like 18 or something. Oh, well, I am doing a paper route and when I get enough money from that I am going to buy fish tanks for all over the HOUSE. :p

Although, knowing me, if I tried to get a pet on my own, I would probably kill it or somethings, because I wouldn't know HOW; oh, GOD, I remember the disaster about 2 weeks after I set up a fish tank for Bettas on my birthday -- I knew absolutely NOTHING about cycling, and although my Mom *did* advise me (SOMEWHAT), I was like, "But I don't WANT to do that!!!!" So she told me that we could wait until the end of the day and we could buy the fish and everything would be fine.... Well, it turns out that the lfs, when they found out about my tank, they were just all like, "You must be excited, eh?" so I picked some fish went home and everything went wrong a few weeks after. :( One fish died of ammonia poisoning; a dominant female killed my first-ever Betta.... UGH. DX

Luckily, I know better NOW.... :) I won't have to cycle my fry tank (for platies), though, supposedly if I add some mature media or clean the mature filter sponge in my new tank (where a filter will be set up.... a sponge filter), then I won't have to cycle it. :D

Well.... If everything goes wrong, then I'll just do better.... NEXT TIME. DX

Thats odd - I'm 14 and bought a Betta on my own at my lfs.

However I think some of the staff recognise me, I asked a lot and questions and have the 'discount card' so they must think I know what I'm doing,

you should cycle every tank ..even fry tanks

Filters cycle, tanks are glass boxes that hold water. That being said, all tanks with fish in them should have a cycled filter for best results.

One of the pet shops next to me has notices up saying it will not sell goldfish to anyone with a bowl or no filter and we are not being "riduculous" (it's all stated on their sign)...my problem is; people will just lie...
