So last night I gave some pea to my male and female betta (that were imported from thailand) because they seemed alittle bloatty. I got up this morning and found my prized male dead, floating upside down. I looked in his mouth and there was a pea in it.

Did he choke to death?

Just from my personal experiance I can't recommend using peas. I mushed it up, I can't believe it killed him.

Off to the local LFS for a new male. I'm bummed at the money I spend (close to 80 for both fish on bidding and importing) and to have the fish die after a week.

did you take the hard shell off the pea? if they try to eat that they will choke.

Yup, shelled the pea, squished it up.

Looked in his mouth and it looked like a green pea was lodged

OMG thats aweful!!!! So so sorry to read that. I am always so worried about some of the pelleted food out there also. I am using Atisons Betta Food for most of my pellet food as I noticed some of my smaller Bettas seem to have trouble swallowing the bigger varieties.

Geez that is really just so sad. What a shame :(

Well I went out and bought a new male. Called a few LFS and liked one I got in contact with. Went there and they had a male VERY similar to what died! Staff was nice and they kept the bowls clean so I was comfortable buying him (and his finnage looked excellent)

He's pretty and settled in his tank. He has flirted a little bit with my red female.

I also bought some ghost shrimp. He doesn't seem interested in eating them but my female is eying them.

He looks a little big, how do approximate the age of a betta?

most bettas at the lfs are already a year old, normal betta lifespan is 2-5 years.

imported looked like this:

I'll show photos of my new one tomorrow.

A note though: the pet store wasn't a chain and the fish guy told me currently he's had his bettas that have came from store live atleast a year (they haven't passed away yet)

Well hopefully he'll stick around for awhile. he jumped over to the female's side tonight :p

The fish was bloated by what?

I don't think it was the pea that killed him/her.

The sad thing is you'll miss him the good thing you have another to look after but I will not blame you for not feeding him peas.

bloated by eating too many days in a row. I think he needed a day or two to fast.

Anyways, it had to be the pea. It was logged in his mouth and he was perfectly fine and healthy 4 hours earlier. No physical problems and was quarantined and treated with bettafix since he came from an importer.

He was in excellent health, and i know it was the pea.
