I just bought some top fin tap water dechlorinator, will this work well with my water changes or is there something better I should use before opening this

It removes chlorine & chloramine, but says nothing about ammonia. This is a problem, as chloramine is a combination of chlorine & ammonia, and when split up leaves you with ammonia. This product does nothing for it, and is probably just sodium thiosulfate, with EDTA added to chelate out any heavy metals.

If Top Fin is the only product line you have access to, go with the tap water conditioner. This states that it does remove some ammonia, or you can use the ammonia remover along with the dechlorinator.

Always check dechlorinator before purchasing to make sure it deals with ammonia as well as chlorine & chloramine. Any that doesn't is nothing more than a sodium thiosulfate solution. You can buy a pound of sodium thiosulfate crystals for around $4, add them to a gallon of distilled water, and have a gallon of basic dechlorinator for under $5.

I would suggest Seachem Prime or Tetra Aquasafe for water treatment, they are both a proven product with an excellent reputation.

thanks.

do i have to use water conditioner with every water change in my tank or only through the cycle process.

Every water change. Water conditioner doesn't go bad, once you find one that works for you buy as large a bottle as you can reasonably afford. I buy a 2 liter bottle of Prime every 6-8 months, and use a sodium thiosulfate mix during most of the summer.

do you buy that off the net or do you get it from your fish store,

if off the net could i have the link?

what do you mean mix sodium thiosulfate,

do you buy something else to mix with it?
