This may seem a bit of a newb question or silly...but can the pump be too strong?

I have previously had the pump just as a pump - but I have just added a aeration tube to it, and obviously it looks more powerful because of the oxygen bubbles. But is there any risk of too much pump? I know that it should be better as it increases water flow, but I do not want to disturb the fish too much. And, I do know fish need moving water to survive. As it is, they seem to be more lively with the addition of aeration and enjoy swimming into it and riding the bubbles. But, just to be on the safe side - this won't disturb them at all, right?

For info - I have three plants that are below the line of the pump output and they don't seem to have much movement from the pump - they more back and forth in a slow fashion, nothing dramatic...

am I being a goon?

Depends on the fish. Some like more current, others prefer stiller water (such as bettas and gouramies).
