Please help, as I have made a big mistake.
The book I have been using to assist me in setting up my aquarium lead me to believe in order to cycle my tank the ammonia would need to reach high levels in order for the nitrifying bacteria to appear. (I'm a complete novice, but thought I had a good understanding until now).
One of my guppies was behaving unusual in that he was constantly swimming at the top and had some slight colour change on the black of his back (a dull reflective grey) - I felt he was stressed and was going to put him in a hospital tank, but as soon as it was set up, he seemed fine. He didn't east this morning and unfortunately he died while I was at work. I have removed him from my tank into the hospital tank (just in case).
Following the advice of another memeber I have completed a 70-80% water change about an hour ago, and additionally added interpet ammonia remover - I am using the API ammonia test strips, but will invest in the proper kit tomorrow. It currently reads 3.0ppm (it was 6.0ppm before I went to work this morning).
When should I do my next water change and how big? Is there anything I can do to help the other 2 fish (also guppies) in the tank.
It is a Biorb 90 (60 litre), has live plants, just 2 guppies, ammonia levels read 3.0ppm, heated to 25C, ceramic media (provided with Biorb), I do not now the pH, but my parents is 7.0ph and they have the same water supplier.
Please help, as I am very concerned about my other 2 fish.
