Yes, males reach sexual maturity at a much younger age than females. If you are going to breed guppies for specific traits I would wait until the females are at least 6 months old to breed them for the first time.
 
Thanks for the advice. I have not been trying to breed but wow do they breed. I had some fry that are not fry any more and all of the young male gups have been chasing my older mamas around like crazy. I lost one of them and I think it was due to chasing. I have moved the older females to another tank and they really seem much more relaxed and happier now.

6 months is too long.Some strains ,if females not fertilised by 3 months,they will not be pregnent anymore .4 months is good enough,if you feed them well.
