well if u'v got a 10g tank or more and u plan on breeding ur fish, i would heavely plant ur tank with rocks and plants live or fake. fry have a natural instincts after birth to find a spot to hide. the only reason for a breeder would be if u had a cat fish or other carnivorus bottom feeder. me, i plan to breed guppys this summer and am working on planting my tank with all live plants this will keep the lil bugars safe from the adults.
The breeding trap. I don't have room for fry rearing tanks, so they stay in the trap until they're big enough. I hardly lose any that way, and the batches are never bigger than 20.
Breeding tanks are the way to go. Its the only completely sure way to breed fish. Breeder traps are very dangerous because of the huge amount of stress that they put on the fish. When you look at the box that the breeding trap comes in it looks like the fish are fine but when you really put the pregnant fish in they usually dash around frantically.
If the fish is already in labour leave her in the tank and get the fry when you can. Moving her at this point could result in her stressing and having a difficult birthing which could cause death to her or the fry, she may be more inclined to eat the fry if stressed as well. HTH
Egg scatterers (the danios and the phantoms) i remove to a breeding tank
The bristle noses - I leave them to do their thing in their normal tank
(unless the male decides to drag the eggs into the open and start eating them??)
