At the moment I have a flat, (not very well stuck on) background on my roma 240 and really like the look (if not the price tag) of the 3D backgrounds. Was just wondering if anyone could give me a quick answer as to how much 'fish space' I will be loosing if I add a 3D background and if I can add one to a tank that is already up and running or am I too late?

Also if anyone knows of a cheaper site to buy the backgrounds? just been looking on ebay and they are cheaper than LFS but still expensive as i reckon i'd need to buy at least two probably three to cover the back of my tank!

THanks

i have 2 in my tank and they are half an inch deep, i have loosly worked it out and i'm loosing about 5-8 ltrs of space. However imo they look great. Now for the bad news, you'd need to strip down your tank and ensure the backs dry and apply the backing with silicone, which will take 24 hours to dry. For the mainstream market IMO the Juwel backs are the best, i have seen some cheaper ones about (£15) but they look rubbish. I think you would need 3 for a 240, they are really easy to cut though.

looks like i'll have to live with my badly stuck on background at the moment then! I'll keep the 3d in mind for the future if i ever have a huge switch around as I do think they look great but have no where to put my fish for a day out of the tank!

Thanks for the help ianho

thats OK, you could always buy one of those massive concrete buckets from B & Q and stick up in there with the filter and heater. and you could always make your own, if you're that way inclined, theres some great ones in the hardware section.

I love my 3d backgound, but it was already in there when i got the tank as it was a used tank. Im getting a new tank later this year and will be making my own 3d background.

There is no doubting 3d back grounds look fantastic I had some in my first tank but the algae build up was a pain and cleaning over time left it looking pale and naff I took it out in the end.

If you are going to put some in I recommend cleaning it very gently :good:

or buy some Oto's, my Oto's keep mine looking perfect.

I always avoid the 3D backgrounds. It is not that I don't like them. It is more a case of me being too cheap to spend the money in the 3D versions. Let's get real here. Each individual 3D may not cost very much but when you add up the cost of 25 separate tanks, things can get a bit costly.
