Got one of these recently to use in my sump.

My questions are...

1, How do the bubbles get created ? I have no airpump with mine, just the RIO 2100 thing.

2, Can I gravity feed the skimmer so the water comes from the tank, into the skimmers "input", through the skimmer and exits the skimmer into the sump entrance chamber ?

Thanks in advance.

Well i dunno wot u mean by the sump part lol but the bubbles are created simply by the venturi opening on the inlet pipe, the water flow causes it to suck in air creating the bubbles :good:

yea i have seen the tank feed skimmers, it seems a bit too risky for me. they run off an overflow holes in the tank. not my cuppa tea , i could just see it all going wrong :S

A number of large systems have the tank overflow feed the skimmer, especially those which have a recirculating pump to atually introduce the air into the skimmer (such as large deltec skimmers). It is no more risky than having a sump system of any sort and ensures that all the water passes through the skimmer before moving on to the rest of the sump filtration.

I looked at this, the only problem being is the bubbles are created by the pump forcing water into the skimmer.

would the gravity feed have the same kind of pressure as the pump to create the bubbles or can I attach an airpump to force air into the water ?

You could get the same flow by having a more powerful pump as a sump pump so that the flow rate is the same. Pumping air into a venturi line doesn't work well, or didn't when I had a go. Using the sump through flow is only really good on re-circ or airstone skimmers

I have one of these skimmers. I believe from the manual that these need to be postioned on the tank or the whole system including pump needs to be located in the actual sump. I have included the link to the pdf of the manual if its any use !!! :good:
