Hi all,

Can anyone tell me which of the two ports (left or right) you connect to the skimmer intake and which one to the airstone?

Also can anyone recommend a orp controller to use with this

Cheers

:hi: to TFF and the salty side of the hobby

I have never used the tmc unit so cant help but we would love to know a bit about you and your tank?

Hi Seffie,

I am a newbie to marine keeping, My tank is 48x30x24 with a sump below. Started setting up at the end of April.

Deltec Sc2060 skimmer
Ati powermodule 8 x 54w
Koralia and tunze powerheads which turn over 12000 litres an hour
eheim 1262 return pump
60kg live rock
Phosphate reactor
2 x 200w heaters

Stock includes

2 mithrax crabs
8 x turbo snails
2x trochus snails
3 x cerith snails
2 x orange marbled snails
6 x red legged hermits
1 x brittle star
1 x blue spotted urchin
1 x spineless urchin?
1 x cleaner shrimp (1 died)

Foxface
4 green chromis
1 Kole tang
2 Tuka anthias
1 jewel algae blenny
1 watchman goby
2 banggai cardinals

Pussy coral
zoa
medusa
leather
Parazoanthus gracilis
Xenia

I currently change 10% of the water weekly and have so far had problems with almost every type of algae there is ( and possibly a few new to science)
I have now got a problem with dinoflaggelates although its not to prolific at the moment it is covering the sand bed, so I am hoping to run ozone to help, hence the question in my first post.

My sump has the water from the main display coming in to the first section through a filter sock, 2nd chamber holds the skimmer and phos reactor, 3rd, 1" sand a little live rrock and chaeto together with a vicous looking crab I found in my tank, next is the bubble trap followed by the return pump in the last section.

Cheers Steve

Wow, thats a big old tank to start off your hobby with :good:

Whats the history of the tank, was everything new? Just thinking about your algae problem!
How long do you have your lights on?
How much and how often do you feed?
Are you running a nitrate remover?
what are your stats?
How many and where are your powerheads?

And where are the photos, lots of photos :p

Hi, Yes all is new, the lights are on for 8 hours a day and i feed twice daily flake and frozen which is defrosted in RO nitrates, nitrites, amomia and phosphate levels all virtually undetectable now. 3 powerheads two face the front at opposite ends and one positioned to give flow to the rear of the tank (no dead spots).

I have cleared most of the algae's although the bubble algae seems to be hard to control at the moment although its not too bad. I have recently developed a problem with dinoflagellates which I have a feeling is going to be a pain. It started with just thousands and thousands of air bubbles on the sand, after a few hours its starts to look slimy and seems to rise from the bed, I have looked at a few pics on the net and am sure this is what it is. I think ozone may help but still need to know the answers to my questions before I can start. This looks exactly the same as I have.

Ok, will wait for your photos :good:

In the mean time,
reduce amount of white light to six hours a day
reduce feeding
move a powerhead so that you get lots of surface agitation - raise ph, what is yours at the moment, morning and night?
move a powerhead so there is flow across the sand

I have heard some people have had good results with algae x but this is a last resort, lets see your photos first :good:

how do i raise ph?

I already have the pipe from my return pump facing the surface which I have drilled holes in which acts like a spray bar.

My ph always seems a little low, I use salifert test but never seem to get a close match to the card. I think it's 7.9...8.0
this is before lights out, i will check again tonight. My tank temp always runs quite high 26-27.9 and that is with no heaters on, I imagine it will be better in the colder months.

Steve

PH changes, take one before lights go on and then one later when lights have been on for a while. It also changes during the day

You will need more surface agitation than a spray bar can give you :good:

PH should run between 8.1 and 8.3 but some recommend bringing it slightly higher if you have the dreaded dino!
