So i'm new at keeping tropical fish.. Just want a few tips or tricks in water changing/cleaning. Easiest way to do it without getting water everywhere? Also when adding new water.. it should be a certain temp and how to get it? I can't imagine putting freezing cold water in would be good for them..

It all depends on tank size.A 30% change refilled with colder water wont hurt. And as far as getting water everywhere....welcome to fishkeeping, enjoy! :hyper: lol

Many people will simply add water from their hot tap to match the temp of their tank water. You can match using your hand, it's close enough. However some people like to add cold water, as long as your water change isn't huge (say no more than 25%) as it can simulate rainfall and some believe that the fish enjoy the cold area of water every once in a while

As for doing the water changes, using a siphon is the easiest way to change your water with the least effort and mess

Hi there and welcome!
In terms of tips and tricks, it really depends on what type of tank you have and most of them you'll pick up by yourself, you'll most likely even develop your own ones!

Anyway, here are a few:
1) When ever doing water changes, put a towel down first, regardless where the tank is. I bought a pair of bright orange towels from Tesco and they now live in my water change bucket. When ever I'm doing maintenance, I just pop one down in front of the tank and use the other to dry myself as I go along.

2) Get some large buckets. Again, it depends on your tank but I always buy the largest buckets I can to make changing more water easier.

3) Get a gravel siphon or at least some long tubing.

4) Mix your dechlorinator in with the water as it's going into the bucket. I take my showerhead apart, whack that into the bucket, let it start filling up and then throw in my tapsafe.

5) Make sure you've got something to pour the water back into the tank with, I use a 2L jug. Ideally aim for larger ornaments as this will disperse the water less, keeping that lovely "just-cleaned" tank the way it should be.

6) In terms of temp of the water, just add a quick blast of hot in there. A few degrees difference doesn't matter, but a difference of 10C in a 50% water change will most likely shock a lot of fish.

7) Clean up as you go along.

8) Make sure your heater is turned off before it goes below the water line, unless you want exploding glass in your tank.

9) Same goes with filter, but if cleaning your filter out, just make sure nothing dries out, or all your good bacteria will die and so will your fish in turn.

Those are the basics, everything else depends on your tank.
Hope this helps.

VaegaVic - that is the best water change suggestion list I have seen posted on the forum. Well done!

doing a 25-30% change, no need to match temperature. (perhaps on very small tanks 10g!) but if you feel you must (providing you are using a good conditioner, heavy metals.) a blast from the hot tap, wont hurt.

the easiest way to Change is using a Python. this allows syphoning to remove, and a direct connection to fill. but most of us use a bucket. the way to be clean, about it, is to be careful.

i use a 20l tub. not everybody will be able to hold a 20l/20kg at shoulder level. so make sure you can lift, and hold, whatever you choose to use.

i add "conditioner/de-chlorinatior" to TANK volume, then add the "COLD" water.

I think its great maybe very simple but something good for an absolute newbie to use as a first guide.

Thanks a lot.
Ive done a few water changes but i havent perfected it yet. These tips definately help!

I've found that roping someone in also helps! (I've just nearing the end of a fish-in cycle. First Double 0 today!).

I've got two 10l buckets. Whilst one is carried upstairs to be emptied, the other one is filling up with tank water and vice versa with the re-filling.

I've found (being quite tall) that I can just lift the full bucket and gently pour it into the tank. You get the occasional dribble down the front of the tank but nothing a towel won't sort (Dedicated fish towel).

I've also found that my cheap as chips siphon bought off eBay is rubbish and that my ultra deluxe battery powered gravel vac is rather good at hovering the gravel!
