Yes, I'm a newbie, and I want to record some of the difficulties that I have gone thru.

Take Gravel Vacumming.

I simply could not get the hang of it! I watched videos and IMed people but it just wouldn't clean the gravel well.

Instead, all that happened was that the water got really murky and disgusting and then it would settle down.

Well, I finally figured it out.

You need to keep on pumping the device up and down until you see that all the air has gone out of the plastic tube that goes into the bucket as well. When that happened, gravity takes over and you kinda just move the pump around and it sucks all the dirt off the gravel. Water should be pouring out of the gravel pump strongly.

Just wanted to share this with other newbies

Don't worry Jacob, i had exactly the same problem when I first attempted to use my gravel vacuum. It is not as easy as it looks!

I know, that why I wanted to post on the topic so others can see how to get the flow going. It was so frustrating!

I am opening the door wide open for immature comments but......
I just suck on the end of the hose to start the siphon. Works quickly and easily and once you've done it once or twice you don't get any water in your mouth.

LOL

I heard you can do that also to siphon off someone's gasoline too.. :hey:

Not that I would do anything like that but with gas prices rising and $100 per crude, ya never know

i used to have that problem, so when i set up my new tanks i just use eco compleat and i wont have to vac as offen(the dirt get eaten by bacteria) and then my biOrb i do the same, when its dirty i vac it (it takes like a year to get dirty if you dod the right ammount of feeding and stocking.

but very good little guide you got here, i might just give vacing another go.
