Time For A Change

after 4 years of having, roughly, the same fish in my tank. i felt like a change. to be fair nothing much happened in the tank. sure the fish fed, swam and generally displayed. but i was left with nothing to do but change water and feed em.

so i had a clear out. i passed on my Green Terror, Feather-fin synos, cory, pleco, khuli loach, RTBS and Bala shark. all i kept was my Silver Dollars and a Rainbow cichlid. whilst i was at it i removed the sand, replacing it with 2-3mm gravel.

it looks like the only replacements i will get are.
a Golden Severum and some Polkadot loaches.

i honestly don't know, truth is i know little but the fish i have kept till now.

perhaps a complete change of direction is what you need. particularly if youre getting a bit bored of what youve got/had. i find that a new challenge and new things to research/learn about can really re-ignite the spark .

I agree with your first post, i've got some green terror myself and after about 2year they're not as fun to watch and i think the tank would look better with alot of community fish such as rams, neons ect.. i started thinking this after i set up a 90 litre tank with some rams ect in lol. although i dont think i could ever bring myself to get rid of my green terrors !!

lol. it was a hard decision. it was not any specific fish, just i had nothing to do. no losses, no illnesses and no spats. now i dont want any of the aforementioned, but new fish will give me something to do.

What about a tanganyika set up? i'm no expert on these but i did alot of reading on them in the african cichlid section as i was thinking of going down them lines in my next set up, they seem pretty active cool fish imo!!

I think you should do some sort of oddball. Try some SAP's (south american puffers), or if your tank is large enough a fire eel? they have a nice color, entertaining and who wouldnt want a giant freaking eel (technically not a true eel though...). OR GET A CRAP LOAD OF TIGERBARBS AND HAVE DAILY SWARMINGS DURING FEEDING TIME!!! Hmmm Pirahnas? there's really endless posabilities for what you crave, and while some ideas (like mine) may seem outlandish or unoriginal i can garuntee youll still have fun!

I know how you feel. At first I was intrigued to view the different behaviour of each inhabitant in my tank, but this does not change much and you soon get used to it.

What about a breeding project?

you know what? this has never been an interest. apart form breeding crays. i had two angels that were, attempting, to breed. but i never caught the bug.

any how. tanks full now:
3x Black spot barbs (rescue fish)
3x Polka-Dot Loach's
1x Humbug catfish
4x Silver Dollars
1x golden sev
1x Rainbow chiclid
1x Redclaw Crayfish.

I think if your going to start again, totally strip it down and get rid of all stock. Then you won't have to work around anything. This will just open the door for anything and everything!

If it was me (lol), i'd go down the planted route. There is so much more to learn and accomplish when going 'proper' planted. You could also (if you have the money) go down the S/W route of fish keeping.

yeah, well, there is a problem there. even "dead cert grow for anybody" plants die with me. honest, i have problems growing grass, in a field. I did think about it though.

Hi if your looking for something with more to do i"ve had a lake malawi tank for about 8 months now i started with just12 fish. I now have20 or so i used slate when i set it up and they love it. Since the fish matuered i"ve got 3 breeding pairs with my afras being the last they seem to love the slate to breed.My orange hongis have had 1 brood and the female is holding again.My labs are going for it as i reply.My lfs take them of me at £1.50 a fry when they reach about 15cm so soon i"ll be able to fund a bigger tank
