HI everyone,

I was just wondering if tiger oscars and red oscars can reproduce together? My husband has 2 of each in the same tank and they havent paired off yet as they are still young.. What age do they pair off at? All 4 of them swim together in a group and seem to get along fairly well.

Any insight would be great.. thanks

As said above, they are the same species, just different colours,

tbh you'll know if/when two pair as the other two will need to be removed for their safety,
although it must be a big tank if your housing 4 Oscars

We were misinformed when we purched the oscars and were told a 55 gallon is big enough for all 4 of them. Dont panic though we are in the process of sorting out something more reasonable for them to grow healthy and happy. I never knew how much fun tank shopping really is. :D

Hopefully we have 2 females and 2 males so we can keep them all and they pair up accordingly. We shall see though.. Thanks so much for the info on reproduction!

wow 55g aint big enough for one let alone 4!! your gonna need a mammoth tank to keep four :) my 6 foot tank 'just' houses 2 oscars, maybe you will need 2x 5 or 6ft tanks? i envy you!!!

you could keep 4 in a 6ft plenty of room it would be filtration.

These guys are my husbands fish (I am scared of his fish to be honest they jump at me when I feed them)LOL

However I do believe we are looking into 2 tanks rather then 1 tank because we dont want fights ect.. My husband is rather attached to these guys/girls and doesnt want to have to part with any of them!
Mind you if we get another tank we will have 4 in total.. Yikes.. talk about a big hydro bill!! But its only fair.. I have 2 tanks for my fish so I guess he should have 2 for his eh! LOL

Thanks so much for the replies! :thanks:

nice on paper, but in reality you will be very lucky indeed to be able to house 2 in each tank, u may get 3 of them that refuse to live with another one, oscars can turn quite nasty "overnight" towards eachother.. theres nothing you can do to calm it, except seperate them fast, i have had large oscars being aggressive as well as very small ones, and its not a pretty sight, with 4 in one tank im afraid its asking for trouble ( though i know your looking for a new tank) and its recommended to get a group to find a pair, but its not garanteed this will ever happen.. just keep a very close eye on them, watch for any of them looking frightend *usually spend time on there sides looking scared* and then work out which is the bully and seperate him :)

oh the joys of oscars
ive seen oscar carnage and its not pretty so be on the look out, and i genuinley hope itall goes well for them and you, and that you are one of the lucky ones ;) you may get 2 that will play together but the chances of 4 is very remote and the cahnces of 2 pairs is even less, sorry

keep us updated though

shelagh xxxxx

Well if they dont pair up the way my husband would like he will want to buy more tanks! YIKES!! I dont think he will be parting with any of these fella's.. They are all quite nice right now.. They all swim together, eat together and play together but dont worry I am not counting on it staying that way.. Our tanks are in the recroom downstairs and we are always down there playing with our kids so we can keep a close eye on everyone in our house.. *smile*

I dont think these guys/girls are very old yet so maybe that is why they are being nice so far.. Perhaps I can get a quick picture of them to post here..I will try later and see if they cooperate.. LOL They are only about 4" each.. So I assume they are young..

Thanks for all the insight.. I dont know what we would have done without this site and all the informative information we have gotten so far!

Hmm odd.. in the livebearers section I can just upload a photo.. but here I cant so I guess I will need to sort out a photobucket account or something.. Be back shortly with pics.. :)

once oscars hit the 14-18month age, thats when sexual maturity kicks in. thats when your likely to start having problems. try and have the extra tank/tanks ready!
