hi all
I thought I'd share this with you all.
the humble Tiger lotus Nymphaea lotus 'Zenkeri is usually propagated via a rhizome
however I have managed to propagate this by a stem (cutting).
All I did was take a broken off stem, cut the end off at an angle and pushed it into the
substrate (pool filter sand), then I added two TetraPlant Crypto at the base of the stem.
It has now been two months since this and the new plant is doing very well as you can see by the pics

mother plant with rhizome on the right of the pic, cutting plant on the left

why not try it yourself :good:

and here is a full tank shot

Wolf

You are always too late for me.

I bought 3 Zenkeri and 4 Rubra Bulbs and if you would have accidentally found this out 3 months ago instead of now you could have saved me some money.

Damn your timing.

Very interesting though. well done.

andy

Very cool. :good:

What is that long plant with the small green leaves, to the left of the tiger lotus?

Sory about the pic, it kept saying it was over 100k so i tried to make it as small as possible, haha.

AFAIK that is Elodea crispa but I could be wrong. it is defiantly an Elodea of some kind

I remember floating a Hygrophila polysperma leaf in my 120l tank for a while to see what would happen and, lo and behold, it started to chuck out a root at the point where it would attach to the stem. Yours is a good demo of what substrate fertilisation can achieve, and the Hygrophila was a good demo of what water column fertilisation can achieve.

Interesting post Wolf.

Dave.

hi wolf, long time no speak. it's wierd isn't it. thats how all mine came from greenline in the first place. no bulbs just cut stems. as they were one of my first purchases at the time i didn't think anything of it. i just planted and they thrived. from the original 2 i bought i have at least 8 plants now and i have given away at least another 8 over the 3 years i have had them in the tank. just goes to show plants are more resilient than we think given the right conditions they will grow....period.

thanks for posting this mate not many people realise that.

I also noticed your Danios. How are the Devario pathirana doing? They look great in that tank.

How are the Devario pathirana doing?
they are doing great but spawning them has proved very hard.
I have managed only one spawning and none of the eggs hatched :/

Great job Wolf!
I recently purchased 3 tiger lotus' myself, 2 with bulbs and the one with out. Now i have a gravel substrate and use root tabs and I noticed that the one without the bulb is growing way faster than the others. Im contemplating just getting rid of the bulbs on the other 2.

remember that bulbs are actually storage organs allowing the plant to lie dormant. without a bulb the other tiger lotus need to produce leaves for photosysthesise and stay alive. you may find that your bulbs dont do anything for ages then suddenly sprout for no apparent reason. i have 3 such bulbs in my rio180, i just leave them buried in the gravel making sure there is a small gap above them incase anything grows. no need to throw them just bury them and forget about them.

This is great news as I have had one of these plants for a while now and I know of at least two (local) members on this forum that are waiting on me to propogate this plant so they can have one.

I was waiting on this plant to produce extra runners/bulbs so I could propogate but seeing this post will certainly speed up the process.

Many thanks Wolf :good:
