I love how both of these species looks, but apparently both of them are fin nippers and semi aggressive unless you get enough of them. I was hoping to add one of these to my tank ( pretty much a Tetra tank, with a few Pearl Gourami ) but wanted to know peoples experience with these fish

The tank is 125gallon so theres plenty of room to swim around

I don't feel either fish should be kept singly. They both are the type of fish that require friends of their own kind. I know both fish have a bad reputation but I found that the tigers do better alone than the tetras do but again I don't advocate for them being kept alone.

Since you have other tetras in the tank there's a chance the red tail would do okay. I've had that happen with both FW and marine fish that they will gravitate toward similar fish. A good example is my green chromis and anthias hang out with each other, I put in a single blue reef chromis and he joined them as well. They all have very similar body shapes though they are not the same species.

Keep in mind this doesn't work with all fish...tangs for example don't like fish that look like them. From my experience with tetras they don't seem to mind other tetras.

Anyway...did that answer you or confuse you?

Pretty much, I have a single guppy that survived the accidentle early cycle of my tank and she hangs out with my harlequins following them around all day. My tank will be pretty much a Tetra tank like I mentioned with hopefully the following ( still working on a final list, might need to trim down )

Harlequin Rasbora
Lemon Tetra
Neon Tetra
Cardinal Tetra
Bleeding Heart Tetra
Corydora
Blue Columbian Red Tail
Penguin Tetra
Pearl Gourami

Corys are a no-brainer in my opinion, they are one of the best aquarium fish out there. I love gourami but never liked keeping them with tetras. Tetras are pretty active fish and it always seemed to me they made the gourami nervous.

I wanted a "centerpiece" type of fish since all the rest of my fish are larger in number but small in size and the Pearls were the calmest ones I could find unless I can find a larger tetra at the LFS

Like the emperor tetra?

haven't seen one and unfortunately the fish store I plan on going to is two hours away all the recon I did on the last visit I didnt see one :( Could possibly do a custom order if they can get it, I know I need to custom order more Pictus for my catfish tank

Worth giving them a telephone call and asking if they can get them.

Looking them up now, I take it from what I've seen and what I've researched, the Tetra family is a pretty small fish, even these guys only grow 2ish inches and need to be in groups

That's true. These are large for tetras but certainly not large fish.

You know of any fish that are semi larger and good "centerpiece" for the tank that work well with tetras?

I had a white mexican sail-fin molly once that was stunning. When it would flash that fin it was really cool looking. It lived with several species of tetra in a 30 gallon tank I had.
