Hi,

I got home today and noticed only one of my green tiger barbs had lost it back fin (sorry don't know the techy name of it).

I guess he's had a bit of a barny with another fish or is there something else up with him?

Is there something like a disease that causes fins to disappear?

He finds it hard to swim and sometimes uses the filter outlet to give him a kick start. Otherwise, think he's learning to keep his head down.

Here's a photo (bit cloudy as just done a water change)...

There is a disease called finrot which causes the fins to rot away. (hence the name  )

How many tiger barbs do you have? They can be aggressive in small numbers. They are more placid in large groups.

it's probably been nipped, but i see you're also having a problem with another barb. keep a close eye on them they may be diseased. did it come home like this do you know? fin rot takes a little time, but can kill a fish if not treated, nips grow back with a good diet.

oops, that was you replying in other thread, not starting it.

Issolate him in a small container at the top of the tank, as onced they struggle to swim they get exhausted and die, sorry.,

Melafix might help speed up the re-generation of the fin. Problem is as wilder said that a. It will tire quickly b. Other fish will see it as bait and nip even more. It needs isolating asap really.

thanks guys, I'm at work now hopefully he'll be ok for when I get home. He looked relativley ok this morning.

I was planning on getting something to isolate him today, so is like a breeding net something that would work or should I invest in a small 1 foot tank for a hospital?

I'll see if the LFS near work have Melafix, could I give that to the whole tank and not cause an upset to the other fish?

BReeding net is OK but not for a long time and not for a big fish really.

a small tank would be ideal.

Yes its herbal completely harmless to other fish.

Hows he doing bless him.

tigar barbs have a habit for fin nipping (i think its them im almost certain it is), well i cant exactly remember but all i know is that fin nipping fish will attack a weeker fish.
hope he gets well soon, ill send him a card :fish:
