been thinking of getting some tiger barbs but i'm a bit concerned because of there reputation as fin nippers, i read a few places that this is greatly reduced if they're kept in a group of 6 of more, whats your views on this ? And secondly if i did have a group of them would i be able to have say four tiger and four golden barbs to make up a group or do they have to be the same !!!! (sorry if thats a stupid question)

cheers

My golden barbs are quite a bit bigger than the typical tiger barb and are much less aggressive. They do not school much but do tend to hang in the same part of the tank as each other. Maybe you could call it a loose schooling. I have never tried them with a tiger barb but I would not expect them to hang together in a group. They don't even school with themselves that much. You may be able to tell that I am not a fan of tiger barbs, They are OK by themselves but they really don't play nice with others.
Spelling edit

If by golden barbs you mean gold tiger barbs, then yes they get along with normal coloured tiger barbs. There are also green tiger barbs. The three colour forms are all the same species and can be kept together in one group.
They are fin nippers but the more you have, the less they nip. But there is no guarantee they won't nip angelfish or male Bettas even if you have a huge group of them.

If you are talking about golden barbs and not gold tiger barbs, then they don't normally school together. Golden barbs (not gold tiger barbs) are more peaceful than tiger barbs and much less likely to nip fins. But all barbs will nip if bored. Hence the reason to keep them in groups, so they can keep each other occupied.

sorry i think my original post may of been a bit mis leading, i was more concerned about the barbs fin nipping my other fish ? because of this i wanted to get at least 6 maybe more but wanted to know if they had to be the same species of barbs or whether i could get maybe a mixture of tiger barbs and golden barbs ? Hopefully i've made my query a bit more understandable now !!!

cheers

you can have golden and tiger barbs in the same tank but they are unlikely to school together.
