found a site with a handy substrate calculator . you tell it tank dimensions , depth required and substrate type and it tells you exactly how much you need .

if id only found this when i 1st upgraded to my 100g it would of saved me a trip to the shop for another 25kg of gravel

I hate that when you go out to buy some only to realise you don't have anywhere near enough for your tank. Good post Mark!

Same, my LFS insisted I needed more with one bag I had about 3 inches of substrate and I bought two bags , I was so convinced I needed it all I opened both bags and washed it all. Now I have an entire bucket of stupidly expensive "Black Gravel".

i had it the other way round . i bought 2 nice big bags thinking yeah that will be plenty , washed it and it only did just under half .
