hi

i jus did a quick water change on my fry tank yesterday

my baby female guppy is around 5 months old and a couple weeks ago she started showing signs of a gravid spot

well during the water changes i noticed new fry which were preety small and then realized what had happend. the other fry have not eaten the newer ones and neither has the mother because i have other fry the roughly the same size or bigger as the new ones which are growing slower then usual. all seems well

i was just wondering if this was possible or had i just never noticed these fry?

Hi Dwarf Dude

Erm, I'm not sure. However, some of my fry started showing signs of having a gravid spot at just a few weeks old. It doesn't mean that they are pregnant, just that you can see the unfertilised eggs inside them.

It does seem odd though that you hadn't noticed the tiny fry in your tank. Maybe someone else can help. I'm a bit new to this  I wouldn't be surprised if guppies can have fry at 5 months old. :S

Yeah, i have a guppy that has a gravid spot as well, but i have no males, though there is slight chance of cross breeding, but i havent heard of any other livebearer crossing with a guppy, so the best conclusion here is they are unfertilised egg's mate

;)

Given how teeny guppy fry can be, it's very easy not to see them if they're hiding and or hunting for food in the gravel at the bottom of your tank. Most of mine stay up top among the live plants and java moss now...because the tetras are down the bottom just waiting for a live snack!

The fry in the all males, no tetras, tank are often down the bottom of the tank scooting around checking stuff out. It's so easy not to see them down there. Ditto the ones in my fry tank, they often seem to disappear against the gravel. Natural camouflage I guess.

Not sure what age guppy females start having babies. I have an albino female that's had a gravid spot for ages but never had any babies, sterile I think. They probably start showing that gravid spot early on knowing guppies. They make rabbits look like monks.

Its very posible for guppies to have fry at that age, one female I had, had her fry at 3-4 months old, though her fry where deformed.

I know it was that female and what her age was, as I watch her being born, and the mating was planned.
