This is my first time using real plants. I've got a new tank and am using real plants as our other tank has silver dollars in which eat anything green so we've had plastic plants for the last goodness knows how long.

My really stupid question: I got some "beginners plants" today and they came in little ceramic pots that were open at the bottom. Do I plant them in these? My sand is deep enough just to push the whole pot thing in.

Also, will HC grow as a carpet without being tied to anything like moss has to be? I would like something that will carpet an area but would moss of some kind be better so it doesn't take over the whole tank?

Thank you for answering my totally blonde questions! :D

Personally, I would take the plants out of the pots.

HC will root in the sand, so no need to tie it down. Plant in individual plantlets, and so most of the plantlets are buried. It may take a while to get started, and many have failed with it.

depending on lighting, water quality and nutrients, it can grow well, however, HC is a plant that needs a lot of light..
