Hi

I'm really interested in setting up a mbune tank and was wondering what the minimum tank size would be. I'm scouring the internet for second hand tanks/setups but would really need size details. Litre and dimensions.

Many thanks

Hi.

Alot of people would say absolute bare minimum is a 55 gallon 4ft tank. I agree, though i have a 190litre/50gallon 3&1/2 ft tank which mine are doing pretty well in, but im moving house soon and plan to upgrade to a 'big as possible' tank, proberbly in the summer ...

It also depends on what kind of mbuna your interested in ???

Not sure what type but i'm trying to aquire another tank and am really interested in mbune setups. It's early stages really. I've not been looking at anything less than 4ft, but realise surface area is more important than the height of the tank. I've seen one tank 4ft but i'm waiting on some dimensions from the seller.

Sounds like you have the right idea in mind. While 55gal is considered a minimum, larger is always better and opens you up to lots of different species. :good:

I started out with a 55 gal. and it worked fine, but I ungraded to a 90 gal. and there is a lot less aggression and the fish have plenty of room to get away from one another.

I think you could get away with a Rio 180 or equivilent, but like every other kind of set up, the bigger you go, more options you have, mine is a Rio 300

I thought you secured a 5x2x2 ?

After looking for ways to fit it in it wouldn't go. Bit gutted as it was a bargain at the price. What i'm gonna do instead is fit another 4ft tank next to my other 4ft.
